Who We Are
SOS Domestic Abuse Projects believes that everybody has the right to live a life free of domestic abuse and violence. We strive to provide a service to anyone who has experienced or is currently experiencing domestic abuse; whether it be from a partner, a parent or a member of the immediate or extended family. Our services are open to everybody. We accept referrals into the projects from members of the public directly and from those who support them.
We don’t aim to force people to leave relationships, and we are aware that for some individuals the process of admitting that there is a problem, seeking support and recovering from the experience of abuse can take a long time. We provide individuals with practical assistance at every stage of their decision-making; through our informal drop-in sessions, legal surgeries, counselling, family support, child and youth services and preventative work individuals are supported to recover from their experiences, move into a place of safety and protect themselves against the possibility of further abuse.
Our staff and volunteers are trained and dedicated to helping individuals and families move on in their lives. We work in partnership with Southend Domestic Abuse Forum, Southend and Castlepoint MARAC, the police and voluntary agencies to provide an integrated support system to those affected by domestic abuse.
We offer work placements to social work students, counsellors and volunteers, and offer training on domestic abuse for interested organisations and professionals. Our supporters range from previous service users, local businesses, churches, community groups and high profile individuals. We are currently working with the well known international human rights ambassador Betty Makoni to improve the lives for girls and women who are the victims of rape, female circumcision and oppression.
